How can aromatherapy help with snoring?
Well, it can, by using decongestant and expectorant oils to clear mucous and catarrh; some oils also dilate the airways so you can have a peaceful night’s sleep. Snoring can be caused by different factors:
By allergies e.g. to tree or grass pollen:
•Reach for essential oils with proven antihistamine actions: German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, Lavender or Peppermint.
By inflammation caused by pollution, coughs/colds:
•Choose anti-viral, anti-microbial or anti-bacterial oils: Eucalyptus Globulus, Frankincense, Rosemary, Lavender, Thyme ct Linalool, Tea Tree, or Sweet Marjoram.
By congestion in the upper respiratory tract:
•Try decongestant or anti-inflammatory essential oils: Peppermint, Thyme, Niaouli, Roman Chamomile, Helichrysum, or Inula

Make up a blend of your favourite oils from the list above to use as a chest/neck rub. 15ml=1tbsp of organic carrier oil (e.g. sunflower, sweet almond, apricot kernel) and add 7 or 8 drops of essential oil (e.g. 2 drops Lavender, 2 drops Eucalyptus, 2 drops Cedarwood, 2 drops Tea Tree). Not for use on the face or near the eyes.
30 mins before going to bed diffuse a blend of the above oils in your bedroom and shut the door – choose your favourites and add up to 6 drops into the water in your diffuser. There are a vast number of essential oil diffusers on the market that are extremely effective at diffusing and dispersing essential oils into the air.
Practise breathing techniques for a few minutes before bed time. In yoga we practise Pranayama breathing. Inhale and exhale more deeply than usual through the nose, feel your belly expand, then your lower lungs and finally upper lungs (rib cage fully expanding back and front). http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/types/pranayama These breathing techniques will also help clear congestion and oxygenate the blood (vital if you live in a polluted area or are due to have an operation under anaesthetic).
If you smoke – try to stop!
If you live in a polluted area try getting away for the weekend, even if only for a country walk or visit to the seaside.
Sleep on your side – avoid lying on your back (especially in cases of sleep apnea)
